The name ‘misericord’ derives from ‘misericordia’ meaning mercy. When tipped up, the oak seats provide ledges on which to perch while standing during services. Many a medieval cathedral dignitary, canon, clerk and chantry priest would have found them an aid to their comfort. As lifting the seats up and down is no longer encouraged, this booklet is designed to display the delightful carvings, which are hidden gems not normally seen.
